Cyber pornography

Child pornography is one of the most heinous crimes in modern society, representing a grave violation of children’s rights and dignity. The severity of child pornography, describing it as a form of child sexual exploitation and referencing Republic Act No. 9775, also known as the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009. This law underscores the illegality of such acts, particularly when facilitated through a computer system.

Reflecting on this issue, I recognize that child pornography is not just an online crime; it has real-world consequences that severely impact victims for a lifetime. As per UNICEF (2020), kids exploited in such a way get subjected to grievous emotional, psychological, as well as physical damage, the consequences of which can be trauma, depression, and even suicide. The digital nature of the child pornography is also such that once the video or pictures get uploaded on the internet, the same gets available for infinite copies, again exploiting the child infinitely after the actual abuse. This reality is deeply unsettling, emphasizing the importance of stricter laws, enforcement, and awareness campaigns to protect children from such exploitation.

An example of the devastating consequences of child pornography can be seen in the case of Peter Scully, an Australian convicted in the Philippines for producing and distributing child sexual abuse materials. His crimes were shockingly disturbing because besides creating and selling explicit contents, he further perpetrated severe physical abuses and torture on the children. The case drew much attention, and it concluded with reiteration of the need for governments all over to tighten laws and cooperation to ensnare criminals. The Philippine government’s action in convicting Scully was a step forward, but it also highlighted the ongoing challenge of online exploitation and the importance of global intervention (Rappler, 2018).

Moreover, the role of technology in child pornography cannot be ignored. While the internet has brought many benefits, it has also provided a platform for criminals to exploit vulnerable individuals. Social media, encrypted messaging apps, and anonymous forums have made it easier for offenders to share explicit content, making regulation and law enforcement efforts more difficult. However, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity offer hope. Many organizations, such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), are utilizing AI to detect and report child abuse materials, ensuring faster intervention (NCMEC, 2021).

Reflecting on this issue , I feel a sense of responsibility to be more vigilant and proactive in spreading awareness. Many people underestimate the dangers of online exploitation, often dismissing it as something that happens in distant places. However, the reality is that child pornography is a widespread issue that can affect any community. It is crucial for individuals to report suspicious activities, educate children about online safety, and advocate for stronger legal actions against offenders.

In summary, child pornography is a very concerning problem that demands action from individuals, communities, and governments alike. Through stringent laws, utilizing technology, and creating awareness, society can collectively strive to eliminate this crime and ensure that children are safeguarded from such atrocities.
